In 2018, artist Jan Sierhuis turned 90. From June 12 to August 12, 2018, Museum Jan van der Togt celebrated this milestone with an extensive overview of his oeuvre, entitled "The Studio of Jan Sierhuis." In addition to works from different periods, the exhibition also featured photographs, old drawings, and other special finds from his studio.

In 1948, Jan Sierhuis (1928) was involved with the CoBrA group. However, he was too young to become a member. Sierhuis eventually became one of the most important Dutch expressionists of the twentieth century. "Without figuration, I would never have known exactly what to talk about, a point of reference. For me, life is that coat. That's where I paint from. Never from formalism or theory."

For his work, Sierhuis received the Royal Subsidy for Painting and the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze portrait prize. In 1987, he received the Jeanne Oosting Prize. He also received an honorable mention at the Prix de Rome. In 2002, Sierhuis was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.

The documentary "Jan Sierhuis Self-Portrait" (2017) was broadcast simultaneously with the exhibition. While painting his last self-portrait, Sierhuis looks back on his eventful and colorful life.
