From June 12 to August 12, 2018, the Jan van der Togt Museum dedicated an exhibition to the work of Aad Donker. The exhibition was prompted by Eva Posthuma de Boer's new novel, En het wonder ben jij (And the miracle is you), inspired by the life of Aad Donker. Together with Gijs Donker, Aad's eldest brother, Eva Posthuma de Boer made a selection from the hundreds of self-portraits painted by Aad Donker.

Aad Donker (1967-1998) gained fame in the early 1990s with his brothers Gijs and Justus as a member of the artists' collective After Nature, which also included Peter Klashorst, Jurriaan van Hall, Bart Domburg, and Ernst Voss. They found their inspiration in nature and expressionism and were particularly successful with live performances, during which they painted large canvases in the midst of the audience.

In 1994, After Nature worked for several months in a gallery in New York. There, Aad Donker met the love of his life, Amy, an American woman who was the daughter of one of the wealthiest art collectors of the time. When his turbulent relationship with Amy ended, Aad lost control of his life. He committed suicide at the age of 31.

Aad Donker documented his life in the form of numerous diaries, letters, and countless self-portraits. He left behind a rich archive that has been made accessible for this exhibition by the Aad Donker Foundation.
