From March 13 to June 2, 2019, Museum Jan van der Togt will present a retrospective exhibition of the painter Willem van Veldhuizen (1954).
Forty years ago, Willem van Veldhuizen became fascinated by the almost empty spaces he encountered in museums. The harmony, the rooms where nothing is superfluous, the focus on art: they still occupy his mind. In his paintings of these spaces, you will find no people, but silence and an overwhelming personal vision of spatiality. With its light effects, reflections, and glimpses of the outside world, Van Veldhuizen's work appears realistic. Yet it is not a literal representation of reality. It is "almost unreal."
The exhibition also includes surprising art and design objects by Iris van Herpen, Scholten & Baijings, Rive Roshan, Olivier van Herpt, and Judith Roux. Like Van Veldhuizen, they play with light, color, and space, as well as with different dimensions. In the museum spaces, they fulfill the role that artworks play in Van Veldhuizen's paintings. A multidisciplinary ensemble of beauty and tranquility.
