To mark the 85th birthday of Klaas Gubbels (1934), Museum Jan van der Togt in Amstelveen is exhibiting a selection of paintings from May 21 to August 25, 2019, which were created in close collaboration with the artist. Approximately 25 works will be exhibited that meant a great deal to the artist and that he did not want to give up throughout his life. His paintings date from different periods, ranging from his early, exploratory work to his well-known cans and new work. This exhibition is part of ARTZUID Annex Amstelveen.
The Rotterdam-born artist uses everyday objects as motifs for his paintings and sculptures. He is known for his paintings of coffee pots, tables, and chairs. In his paintings, the coffee pot—which he usually refers to as a kettle—is, as it were, a character. It sits on a chair at a table or meets other brightly colored kettles on the flat surface. Gubbels wants to exploit monotony and emphasises the essence by omitting everything that is superfluous. "You can make a beautiful painting... that's possible. But a painting that says something... that's what I want," says Gubbels.
ARTZUID Annex Amstelveen Museum With this exhibition, Jan van der Togt joins forces with ARTZUID Annex Amstelveen, an extension of ARTZUID Amsterdam. In Amstelveen, sculptures by Klaas Gubbels are exhibited at various outdoor locations. The Jan van der Togt Museum is the starting point of the route through Amstelveen to Amsterdam.
