Due to its great success, the exhibition by Spanish artist Lita Cabellut at Museum Jan van der Togt has been extended. Cabellut's monumental works will be on display at the museum until March 3, 2019. Lita Cabellut - A Chronicle of the Infinite has already attracted 10,000 visitors. Thanks in part to this well-attended exhibition, the Jan van der Togt Museum is proud to have equaled its previous year's visitor record in 2018.
Over the years, Lita Cabellut has developed a unique technique in which she paints large portraits and combines traditional fresco techniques with oil paint. By then breaking the paint layer of these impressive works, a new image is created through a combination of chance and force. With this, Cabellut wants to let go of what we can recognize and control. "As if you could break time with your own hands." The resulting image is freely created and has taken on a new essence.
Lita Cabellut was born in 1961 in Huesca (Sariñena), where she lived on the streets until she was adopted by a prominent family at the age of twelve. She was taken to museums such as the Prado in Madrid, where she came into contact with the old masters. The young Cabellut was inspired by paintings by Velázquez, Goya, and Frans Hals, as well as the many frescoes in her hometown. After completing her education, Cabellut had her first exhibition at the town hall of Masnou in Barcelona. Two years later, at the age of nineteen, she left Spain to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in the Netherlands, where she still lives and works today.
Cabellut's work is exhibited worldwide. She has previously had exhibitions in museums in Seoul, Seattle, Mumbai, Delhi, Tokyo, Berlin, and at the Noord-Brabant Museum in Den Bosch.
Publication: A richly illustrated catalog will accompany the exhibition.
