Workshop: Make Your Own Freedom Apron

  • JAN Museum 50 Dorpsstraat Amstelveen, NH, 1182 JE Netherlands (map)

In collaboration with Amstelveen Oranje, Museum JAN is hosting a workshop on May 5 titled: “Make Your Own Freedom Apron”

In 1945, the liberation skirt became the symbol of the liberation celebrations following World War II: a patchwork skirt full of stories, memories, and life lessons. Join in this long-standing tradition and show what freedom means to you!

During this period of liberation, Mies Boissevain-Van Lennep came up with a way to celebrate freedom and bring people together. Working together, women used leftover fabric to make cheerful patchwork skirts as a symbol of unity. As they worked, they shared their stories.

Just like last time, we’ll gather at the JAN JUNIOR workshop at Museum JAN in Amstelveen to share stories. In the workshop, we won’t be making a skirt—we’ll be making your very own “freedom apron.”

We invite everyone—young and old—to join us in this effort. In doing so, we hope to reflect on the meaning of freedom and on the stories that bring us closer together.
