Thom van Rijckevorsel (1977) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2019, after working in the advertising industry for more than fifteen years. He creates videos, drawings, sculptures, and installations in which he explores the relationship between constructed images and reality. How do you maintain control in a world where physical and digital reality, matter and image, fact and fiction are increasingly intertwined?
Van Rijckevorsel draws on his experience as an advertising designer in his artwork. He is fascinated by the process of image creation, storytelling, the desire for control, and at the same time dealing with boundaries and rules.
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
This exhibition at Museum JAN presents the latest acquisition by the municipality of Amstelveen: the video Wat ik moet weten (What I need to know). This work by Van Rijckevorsel fits perfectly with the municipality of Amstelveen's ambition to enrich its collection with works by promising artists from the region.
