From May 28 to July 3, 2016, the Jan van der Togt Museum dedicated an exhibition to the work of glass artist Mari Mészàros.
Mari Mészàros (1949) was born in the Hungarian town of Tiszaszentimre. From 1972 to 1977, she studied glass at the art academy in Budapest. Mészàros has lived and worked in the Netherlands since 1980. She has won several important art prizes.
Mészàros has always been fascinated by the proud resilience of objects that bear the traces of time, history, and human life. The imperfection of reality affects her more than its literal representation. The fragment that conceals the 'whole' within itself intrigues her more than the 'whole' itself.
In her work, Mészàros transforms living people into objects; into future documents of their present lives. But these objects differ from archaeological finds in peat, ice, or preservatives. From the plaster casts, which preserve personal physical dimensions, she creates sculptures that represent eternal, universal human feelings.
Mészàros' work is represented in numerous international private and museum collections. The Jan van der Togt Museum also has a glass sculpture by her in its permanent collection.
